Cinematic and with real marquee letters – Opening credits by FEEDMEE Design underline the authenticity of "Angela Merkel – Im Lauf der Zeit"

by Eyes & Ears of Europe

Cologne-based creative agency FEEDMEE Design produced the opening credits for Broadview TV's "Angela Merkel – Im Lauf der Zeit" ("Angela Merkel – Over Time'') with intentionally imperfect typography.

It was supposed to be different – pure, real and authentic, without being overly designed or looking like "classic" opening credits. At the same time, it had to be able to be integrated smoothly into the already filmed opening scenes without causing interruptions. The creative team at the Cologne agency FEEDMEE Design took on this task and made use of the marquee letters that appear in the film's opening credits.

Completely coherent

"It was important to the director, Torsten Körner, that the design harmonises and connects with the cinematic look," shares Laura Giersdorf, Project Manager FEEDMEE Design. That's why the creative team opted for subdued opening credits that fit perfectly into the flow of the opening scenes. For this, they used a special detail and digitised the marquee letters of the opening credits location – the Bundesplatz Kino in Berlin.

Decision for "imperfect" font

To achieve more depth and character, the agency decided not to choose a "normal" typeface: "The classic, real marquee letters were photographed and converted into a digital typeface by using Fontself Maker," the Project Manager continues. "This gave us a very characteristic, authentic and deliberately imperfect typeface to work with, very pure and in its own style." However, the agency did not only use this for the opening credits; the content section separators were also visually adapted to it.

Great feedback from all sides

Both the client Broadview TV and the creatives themselves are very satisfied with the unique result. The collaboration also turned out to be very pleasant, because most of the creative team had already worked together on the production of "Schwarze Adler". This way, "a deep, intensive and very open exchange of the most diverse approaches to ideas quickly developed.”
