Michel Comte in Berlin: Iconic Photography from a Defining Era

From 11 July to 29 August 2026, CAMERA WORK Gallery in Berlin presents an exhibition featuring 30 selected works by Swiss photographer Michel Comte. Curated from vintage prints in the gallery's collection and edition works from Éditions Comte, the exhibition offers a focused insight into the oeuvre of an artist who profoundly shaped the visual language of fashion, portrait, and advertising photography throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Comte's photographs represent an era in which powerful imagery was created before the widespread use of digital image manipulation. Through masterful lighting, striking contrasts, and an exceptional sensitivity to character, he created portraits that remain icons of contemporary photography. His images are immediate, authentic, and timeless, capturing their subjects with an intensity that transcends conventional fashion and celebrity photography.

After training as an art conservator, Michel Comte began his career in Zurich's art scene before achieving international recognition through fashion photography. Collaborations with renowned brands including Armani, Chanel, Versace, Lancôme, BMW, and Ferrari established him as one of the most sought-after photographers of his generation. At the same time, he portrayed personalities such as Sophia Loren, George Clooney, Miles Davis, and Carla Bruni, while publishing numerous photography books that document the breadth of his artistic work.

Alongside his commercial career, Comte increasingly devoted himself to artistic and documentary projects. His work explores humanitarian issues in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross, as well as the effects of climate change and the melting of glaciers. His photographs have been exhibited in prestigious museums and galleries around the world.

Michel Comte is also well known within the Eyes & Ears of Europe community. In 2010, he received the Eyes & Ears Excellence Award—renamed the Eyes & Ears Inspiration Award in 2020—in recognition of his outstanding contribution to visual communication and his lasting influence on the evolution of contemporary visual culture. His work uniquely combines artistic excellence, emotional storytelling, and communicative impact—values that continue to define the mission of Eyes & Ears of Europe today.
