Looking Back Eyes & Ears Awards 2023: The Copenhagen Bench
by Eyes & Ears of Europe
As part of the international Eyes & Ears Awards, exceptional campaigns in the category "Best cases in a worst-case crisis" were recognized. One of the standout campaigns of 2023 was "The Copenhagen Bench" by TV 2 Denmark, which, with its simple yet powerful message, demonstrated how creatively and effectively global challenges can be addressed.
To make the consequences of climate change directly tangible for everyone, TV 2 Denmark turned to a Danish design icon – the Copenhagen bench. However, instead of an ordinary piece of urban furniture, they altered the design: the bench was raised by 85 centimeters, corresponding to the UN Climate Report’s forecast for sea level rise by the year 2100. In collaboration with the original manufacturer, 15 of these elevated benches were created using recycled metal and wood. They were placed in central locations in Denmark's largest cities, immediately drawing attention.
Through this symbolic yet realistic action, TV 2 Denmark succeeded in making the abstract issue of climate change tangible and integrating the urgency for action into people’s daily lives.
