Exhibition Tip: Erwin Wurm Retrospective at ALBERTINA MODERN

by Eyes & Ears of Europe

To mark Erwin Wurm’s 70th birthday, ALBERTINA MODERN is hosting an extensive retrospective that offers a unique glimpse into the versatile work of this internationally acclaimed artist. Wurm’s creations, ranging from sculptures and drawings to photographs and videos, explore the boundaries of traditional art forms while challenging perceptions of everyday reality.

A central theme in Wurm’s work is his engagement with the concept of the sculptural. He deconstructs classical ideas of form and static structure, opening new perspectives on the relationship between body, space, and social constructs. Iconic works like the One Minute Sculptures invite viewers to become part of the artwork, while Narrow House critiques societal norms and the confines of bourgeois thinking. The iconic Fat Car offers a satirical commentary on modern excess and consumerism.

The exhibition features key works from every phase of Wurm’s career, from his early wooden sculptures to newer pieces, some of which are being shown for the first time. Highlights include the Substitutes, where the human body disappears, leaving only clothing as a ghostly remnant, and the Flat Sculptures, which transform letters into three-dimensional canvases, pushing the boundaries of painting.

This retrospective offers a rare opportunity to experience the diversity and innovation of one of the most significant contemporary artists of our time. Wurm’s works surprise, provoke, and inspire viewers to rethink the ordinary. The exhibition will be on view from September 13, 2024, to March 9, 2025, at ALBERTINA MODERN.
