Lambie-Nairn redesigns ITV News

Eyes & Ears of Europe

Recently, the branding agency Lambie-nairn implemented the redesign of the ITV News in collaboration with Simon Jago, Creative & Business Director at BDA. The first rebranding after 15 years covers the entire brand platform, identity toolkit, opener, on-air graphics, set design and the regional on-air identities. Sophie Lutman, Creative Director at London-based Lambie-Nairn, comments: "Our goal was to present a realistic picture of life in Britain. The news is part of our everyday life. Sometimes it has a lasting effect on us, sometimes it is a small part of our day. We wanted to detach ourselves from some of the standard formats of the news sector. We had the feeling that stylized graphic titles do not match the positioning of the ITV brand and our vision for the brand ITV News. We wanted to stay true to the viewers of ITV and thus developed a clean, timeless grid system that captures real scenes of everyday life." The main idea and the promise of ITV News are to let the audience experience the stories firsthand. Therefore, Lambie-Nairn came up with the idea of combining different perspectives with each other and thus generating a complex overall picture for the redesign. The opener is based on a grid system in which individual issues are told from different viewpoints. Together this results in the overall context of the story. The combination of typeface and logo forms the new colour-flexible ITV News-identity. The predominantly blue colour palette is intended to reflect the serious reporting. At the same time, these colours fit into the entire channel identity and the new network rebranding. More information and a selection of openers can be found at http://de.lambie-nairn.com

'Heute im Osten' - New interactive MDR-Format

Eyes & Ears of Europe

Since April the MDR presents its viewers a new format: "Heute im Osten." Mainly, it discusses exciting topics of the central German history from then and now. The special and innovative aspect of this project are the topics which are being transported from web to TV. But where do these experiences, videos, pictures and information come from? The editors of the MDR receive them from viewers and others interested via chat, Twitter and Facebook. They are then edited and made part of the web-programme. Every 2 weeks - Saturdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 4.05 p.m. - the host Kamilla Senjo presents these topics that have already been discussed online and on the web-show on TV. To also add an interactive element to the studio the MDR developed a so-called Communicator - a touchscreen on an infrared basis. Using this tool the host can control and navigate the aired content and virtual settings. This means the host also directs the show live in the studio. The project integrated all areas of the MDR and promoted a joint development with colleagues from the Operation Directorate, Department of Telemedia, the Production Management, the Art Direction and the daparment 'Zeitgeschehen'. As a strong partner the design agency FEEDMEE supported the show from the first idea to the first broadcast. The product of this collaboration is a new connection between the Internet and TV. Exhibition tip: 'A Matter of Taste - Fashion in the 1970's'

Eyes & Ears of Europe

Until 15 September 2013, the Müncher Stadtmuseum is showing the exhibition 'A Matter of Taste - Fashion in the 1970's'. Especially in the realm of fashion, the 70s brought an abundance of original style experiments: Hippie Flower Power, blue jeans, folklore, mini and maxi fashion, platform heels, hot pants, flared pants, polyester shirts, apron dresses, flowery patterns, disco glam and punk wave. Clothes in the 70s showed individuality. Ideas were copied, combined and created according to mood. Clothes expressed peoples' views on feelings, life and society. The exhibition shows pieces of international fashion brands and the Munich fashion scene, thus illustrating the diversity, originality, and contradictory nature of fashion of the 70s. Billboards, music posters, graphics, fashion photographs and 'Madame' journals from this decade complete the show. 'A Matter of Taste - Fashion in the 1970s' until 15 September 2013 at the Münchner Stadtmuseum, St.-Jakobs-Platz 1, D-80331 Munich. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed on Mondays. Further information at www.muenchner-stadtmuseum.de

Book tip: 'Internetauftritte'

Eyes & Ears of Europe

"A screen is not a stage, the internet is not a world theatre and we are not all role-players..." writes Ulf Otto in the introduction to his recent publication 'Internetauftritte - Eine Theatergeschichte der neuen Medien'. Performance on the web, just like performance on the stage, ideally creates attention. In his book, the author traces the historical entanglements of theatre culture and new media from internet theatre and interactive art to computer games and cosplays, from Wagner to 'World of Warcraft' and from bourgeois tragedy to the social network. Ulf Otto is a Dilthey Fellow for media, theatre and popular art at the University of Hildesheim. His research focuses on the convergence of theatre and art history, the cultural history of theatrical practices and the theatricality of digital media. The 319-page publication was published by the transcript-Verlag and can be purchased for € 29.80. Further information at www.transcript-verlag.de
