EEOFE Ambassadors: In Conversation with Martin Härtlein
by Eyes & Ears of Europe
In the Ambassador Program of Eyes & Ears of Europe, we promote exchange and networking within the European media and creative industries. Our Ambassadors bring valuable perspectives from different countries and actively contribute to the development of our network.
To kick off this series, we introduce Martin Härtlein, Head of Creation – CD, Creative Solutions at ProSiebenSat1PULS4 in Austria. With over 20 years of experience, he has shaped the brand landscape of the Austrian TV sector – from VOX and RTL2 to the launch of ATV and the management of the PULS 4 and PULS 24 brands.
In a conversation with Luise Flügge (Editorial Eyes & Ears of Europe), Martin discusses his motivation to become part of the Ambassador Program, the challenges of the Austrian media industry, and his goals as an Ambassador to increase the visibility of creative professions.
Luise Flügge (Editorial Eyes & Ears of Europe): Martin, what motivated you to become part of the Eyes & Ears of Europe Ambassador Program?
Martin Härtlein: Cooperation is a central value at ProSiebenSat1PULS4. Whenever possible, we rely on collaboration to achieve shared goals more effectively. The inspiration that arises from such processes and the exchange of knowledge are invaluable. Eyes & Ears of Europe helps us to build and strengthen connections beyond our group.
LF: What do you see as your main task as an Ambassador for Eyes & Ears of Europe, and how do you want to contribute to the development of the network?
MH: The Eyes & Ears Conference has always given me a unique insight into the creative work of our industry. I see my role as Ambassador primarily in increasing the visibility of the network in Austria. There are few platforms that focus so intensively on design, promotion, and marketing in the audiovisual media. Eyes & Ears of Europe not only makes the organization itself visible but also the work of an entire industry.
LF: What goals do you pursue as an Ambassador, and how can the network actively support you?
MH: I primarily want to advocate for the fascination and creative freedom of our profession at universities in Austria. This field is no longer as present in education as it once was. I also want to broaden the perspective beyond the German-speaking world. Although Austria is geographically close to Eastern Europe, our focus is often limited to the DACH region – I'd like to break that open.
LF: Which aspects of the European media and creative industry are particularly important to you, and how can networks like Eyes & Ears of Europe further promote them?
MH: The open exchange of experiences. Inspiring each other and getting better together – that's essential. Networks like Eyes & Ears of Europe play a key role because they bring together the relevant players.
LF: How does the market structure in Austria influence your work? What challenges do you see for the regional media industry?
MH: The biggest challenge in Austria is the enormous media diversity for a relatively small market. In addition to Austrian offerings, viewers can also access all German-language content from Germany. We also compete with international streaming services and digital entertainment platforms. This makes it all the more important to emphasize regionality and succeed with Austrian content.
LF: Thank you for the insightful conversation, Martin. We are very happy to have you as an EEOFE Ambassador by our side.
