Storytelling & AI - from Aristotle to Alexa

15.05. / An Event from Eyes & Ears of Europe, the City of Cologne and the Mediennetzwerk.NRW

Eyes & Ears of Europe

Digital change has a major impact on the media industry and the fight for attention is becoming increasingly difficult. TV channels, digital channels and online providers are competing for the attention of viewers. Technical innovations enable the user to have an immersive and interactive experience. The storytelling process is being re-invented.

Opportunity or Threat?

For marketers and creative people this means a change of thinking, but at the same time also a large playground of possibilities. It has never been so important for industry players in the audiovisual sector to follow current trends and perspectives and take them into account in their daily work.

Artificially intelligent systems have already arrived in our everyday lives and are transforming our society. They analyze and generate images, texts, sounds, language, recognize faces and emotions, write news articles, compose music, diagnose fatal diseases, fly drones, play Space Invader, Go & Poker - many of them faster and often better than humans are able to.

AI as Storyteller

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly entering areas that were previously reserved for creative minds, including classic storytelling. Companies are using AI to completely rethink digital storytelling. There are the first commercials, movies and games written entirely by AI systems.

  • What impact will AI have on the storytelling of the future?
  • How will the creative industry change when complex algorithms take professional photos and write films on their own?
  • And where can language assistants like Alexa, Cortana & Co. be used?

Eyes & Ears of Europe, in cooperation with the City of Cologne and the Mediennetzwerk.NRW, will get to the bottom of these as well as further questions - on 15 May 2019 in Cologne.

The event will take place in German. Select presentations may be in English.

Further information and programme content will follow shortly.

Storytelling & other narrative methods

Head of Institute for Applied Narration Research at Stuttgart Media University

People are "Storytelling Animals" (Gottschall): We think in stories, experience in stories and explain the world to ourselves with stories. Modern brain research and psychology are finding more and more evidence that stories are one of the central thought and communication formats. Storytelling and other narrative methods are becoming more and more important, especially in a world in which digital media determine virtually every aspect of life. The presentation will explain the background to this meaning of storytelling, what makes a good story, and how other narrative methods such as storylistening and storydoing work.

This presentation will be held in German.

Artificial Intelligence is eating the world

Patrick Arnecke, Head of Design & Promotion SRF, Zurich

Artificial intelligence (AI) has developed by leaps and bounds in recent years. AI is now considered the 4th industrial revolution that will turn society, culture and work upside down. Hype and expectations are enormous, many challenges unsolved. What are artificial intelligence and machine learning? How does Deep Learning work - the technology that has recently made the most amazing progress? Using many concrete examples, Patrick Arnecke shows the state of development and describes the consequences for creation and storytelling.

This presentation will be held in German.

Artificial Storytelling - Best Cases, Learnings and a Lab

Nina Klaß, Head of nextMedia.Hamburg

From automatically created podcasts to books written with the help of AI to autonomous cameras: media and digital companies are aware of the potential of artificial intelligence and integrate it into their creative and management processes. As an initiative for media innovation, nextMedia.Hamburg keeps an eye on these developments and compiled best cases and important learnings in 2018 in exchange with renowned media companies and institutions at the media location. We will share these experiences and practical insights in this keynote.

This presentation will be held in German.

Digital storytelling in the fight for attention

Maximilian Klopsch, Managing Director SevenOne AdFactory, Unterföhring

What do creative people in advertising and content production actually think about AI? Is it a threat to their job or is it an "enabling tool " to tell better stories? How does Artificial Intelligence influence storytelling, especially with regard to the most valuable currency in the media industry - the viewer's attention? The presentation will address these questions and also give an insight into how the technology is already being used in marketing at ProSiebenSat.1.

This presentation will be held in German.

DeepStory: A Story of Co-Creation Between Man & Machine

Jeroen Burms & Michiel Ruelens, Lead Datascientists ScriptBook, Antwerpen

DeepStory, an AI script generator that writes pre-engineered feature films, was created by ScriptBook, market leader in AI script analysis and box office forecasts. Recent advancements in the field of Neural Language Generation have allowed the generation of text that is almost indistinguishable from human writing. DeepStory extends these models by adding focus on script structure, character development and theme awareness, resulting in a powerful co-creator.
