Short legs, colourful bubbles and bright colours – CapeRock produced the design package of the EYES & EARS for the second time

With walking ears and eyes, colourful shimmering bubbles and an automated toolkit, the design package for the EYES & EARS 2021 came once again from the hands of Amsterdam agency CapeRock. 

The EYES & EARS 2021 had to be held digitally again. As design partner, the Amsterdam agency CapeRock took on the challenge of highlighting the event alongside the many other digital offers as well as generating attention – and was able to master it with flying colours. CapeRock had already accompanied EYES & EARS as design partner in 2020 and developed the design one step further in the second year.


A wider colour palette for even more attention

The design had to be eye-catching and at the same time stand out from the previous year. "The challenge was to develop a design system that contained all the information while feeling fresh compared to the previous year," says Marco-Paul de Jeu, founder of CapeRock. Therefore, the agency opted for a wider choice of colours, where each colour was eye-catching with strong contrasts. The designers additionally combined the various colourful visuals with bubbles that seemed to waft across the screens, colourfully dyed and perfectly adapted to the background, thus creating the corresponding dynamics. Using numerous layers of effects, they were also given a realistic shine. The colour scheme not only reflected the entertainment value and festivity of the event, but also supported the playful EYES & EARS mascots.

Eye and ear as event mascots

The walking eye and ear, the EYES & EARS mascots, which the team of Eyes & Ears of Europe enthusiastically embraced back in 2020, were also further developed by CapeRock: thus, the eye and ear were given more freedom of movement, allowing them to playfully bring the event design to the right level of life. With 14 different animations and four different motion sets, the design package was particularly varied. This was possible thanks to the development of a custom event toolkit.

A toolbox for the whole event

Designing the various award videos was another challenge for the Amsterdam agency: "To be able to produce so many award videos, each consisting of different information, we automated the design toolkit in After Effects. To do so, we had to develop a design system that would allow us to script both the design and the data entry." With the help of a database that the team of Eyes & Ears of Europe filled with the necessary information, the scripts were eventually implemented for the production of all award videos.
